Diet is quite a controversial topic in the cancer community. Some swear by it, while others completely disregard it. Although no single food has been proven to cause or cure cancer, a healthy diet can be linked to better health overall.

We have prepared a list of nutrient-packed foods that are easy on the stomach, which will help you power through any treatment you may be going through.

Avocados

Rich in healthy fats and calories, can be enjoyed on its own or on some whole-grain soft bread. These are excellent if you have a reduced appetite because they are very filling and have a delicate flavor.

Juices/Smoothies

Blending up some (thoroughly washed) fruits and vegetables is a great idea for cancer patients. It makes the food easier to consume, especially if you are experiencing mouth sores or flavor changes. It may not feel like you’re eating a whole meal, but your body is still getting those valuable nutrients. The American Cancer Society recommends eating about 2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables a day when going through treatment. Putting your fruits and veggies in a smoothie will make this super quick and easy to check off.

Bone Broth

Bone broth helps support your immune system, it’s densely packed with nutrients and electrolytes that your body needs during treatment. You are supposed to drink 80-100oz (2.3-3 liters) of liquid every day when going through treatment, and this is a great alternative to drinking plain old water, as it is just as hydrating, but packs on those extra valuable nutrients.

Bread and Crackers

You may experience some nausea and diarrhea when going through treatment, plain, dry foods such as bread and crackers can be a godsend when it comes to easing that queasy feeling.

Papaya

Packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. This superfood can help increase your platelet count, which could be low due to chemotherapy. Papain, an enzyme found in the fruit, has even been linked to stimulating immune cells to fight malignant bodies. With its soft texture and mild flavor, it’s certain to become a staple for many patients.

Fermented foods

Kefir, kombucha, and kimchi are just a few examples of probiotic foods which can prove very beneficial during treatment. One of the most common side effects of chemo is mucositis (changes to mucous linings in the digestive system, often leads to diarrhea, mouth sores, and inflammation), and eating probiotic foods can help prevent it from happening, by keeping your gut bacteria balanced and happy.

Pineapple

This delicious fruit is great to snack on during chemo sessions. It has been linked to reducing mouth sores and inflammation, plus it can help with dry mouth! Overall, it’s a great food to eat on the go, no matter where you are headed.

Ginger

By now you probably know that ginger can be very helpful when it comes to an upset stomach. Who hasn’t been given some Ginger Ale to ease their nausea? Well, it will probably come as no surprise that it can help when it comes to chemo-induced vomiting as well. Add some fresh ginger to your tea, or have ginger capsules handy whenever you are feeling queasy!

What else may be important?

These are just a few foods that may prove helpful during your cancer treatment, but remember to check in with your doctor, as some foods may interact negatively with certain medications. Also do not beat yourself up if you have some french fries or a milkshake. You are going through an incredibly difficult battle, and it is totally ok to enjoy some junk food in moderation if you are craving it. Just try not to make a habit out of it.
