Cancer: Fact or Myth?

Cancer: Fact or Myth? photo

When it comes to learning about cancer, there is a lot of information out there. However, it is often hard to distinguish between what is true and what is false. There are many outlandish claims being made and patients often find themselves not knowing what to believe. In this article, we will debunk some common misconceptions, as well as share some hard-to-believe facts about the disease and what causes it.

Myth: Eating sugar can cause cancer, or make existing cancer worse

According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer cells consume more glucose (sugar) than normal cells. This does not mean that eating more sugar will “feed” the cancer cells more and make them grow faster than they would have without that extra cookie. All cells need sugar to survive and grow, the only difference is that cancerous cells grow faster, and therefore use up more sugar.

Myth: Use of cell phones, computers, and microwaves can lead to cancer

Although high-frequency radiation can lead to changes in genes, and effectively cause cancer, it cannot be found in household items. It’s more likely to appear in nuclear power plants and x-ray rooms. Your cell phone, computer, and microwave operate on low-frequency radio waves, which are not harmful to the human body.

Fact: Processed meat is linked to colon cancer

Although the reason for this is not clear (could be due to nitrite levels in processed lunch meats), consumption of processed and red meats has been linked to an increased risk of getting colon cancer. Try substituting these meats for some more lean protein like fish, tofu, beans, or chicken to stay healthy!

Myth: Herbal products can cure cancer

There is no proof that herbal or other alternative products can cure cancer. However,
there have been studies showing that some of these products can help patients cope
with the physical and mental side effects of the treatment. Make sure to do thorough
research and consult your doctor before trying any of these for yourself.

Fact: Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of cancer

Heavy drinking can increase your likelihood of getting mouth, colon, liver, and even breast cancer. Although the definition of “heavy drinking” is highly debatable, most sources say to not drink more than 7 standard drinks per week for women, and 14 for men.

Myth: Deodorant increases your chances of getting breast cancer

There have been claims that the aluminum found in some of these products could get absorbed into the body and infect cells. There are no strong studies that would link the use of antiperspirants and deodorants to an increased risk of getting cancer. Nothing to worry about here.

Fact: Acupuncture can help ease chemo-induced nausea and dry mouth

Acupuncture has been shown to improve some negative side effects of chemo. This is something worth trying if you are struggling with things such as nausea or pain, as long as your doctor gives you the go-ahead to do so.

These were just a few of the popular facts and myths about cancer. If you are unsure about something related to your condition do not hesitate to ask your doctor
