Read moreComputed tomography is an advanced imaging test used to diagnose many diseases. Computed tomography is also one of the most frequently used tests in cancer diagnostics. Many patients who receive a referral wonder what the computed tomography actually looks like. This article explains this. However, first, to better understand the entire procedure, it is necessary to explain what this examination is about.
Computed tomography is a type of imaging examination that utilizes X-rays - the same type of electromagnetic radiation that is used during standard radiographs. What sets apart standard X-ray machines and CT scanners is the complex design of the latter. CT scanners take numerous acquisitions during the examination, showing the patient's body from many sides, at many angles. The radiation source and its detector move around the patient during a CT scan. Collected data is transferred to a computer, which creates a detailed image.
The patient does not have to undress for a CT scan. However, is it important to remove all metal items from clothing. Metal elements can disrupt the obtained image, causing "artifacts". For this reason, it is also recommended to take off metal buckles, earrings, belts, any type of jewelry, etc.
What does the actual scanning procedure look like? First, the patient lies down on a special table, which is then slowly moved into the gantry (round tube). Once the patient is in the correct position, the X-ray tube rotates around the patient and takes hundreds of shots - called acquisitions. The patient is under the supervision of the medical team throughout the entire examination. Most CT scanners are equipped with an intercom, which allows the patient to stay in constant verbal contact with the supervising technician.
The duration of the study largely depends on the size of the study area, type of scan and whether contrast is administered. Computed tomography usually takes from several to several dozen minutes. Both the duration and quality of the image obtained also depend on proper preparation and compliance with all recommendations.
Preparation for computed tomography depends on the area under examination. However, there are some general rules that must be followed in preparing for the test. So how should the preparation for a CT scan look like?
Additionally, if a CT scan with contrast is performed, it is necessary to drink plenty of fluids - approx. 1 liter of non-carbonated beverages.
