VASCULAR SURGERY AND AESTHETIC MEDICINE

I believe that 3D visualizations will significantly improve the quality of communication with the patient, both before treatment and during recovery after the procedure. One cannot forget about the aspect of treatment planning or its modification on the basis of the obtained images

With so many medical specialties, why did you choose surgery?

During my studies, I watched surgeons efficiently make huge decisions, operated on and gave patients chances for further life. Once, in college, I accidentally assisted on hooks during the heart bypass surgery, and then I fell in love with surgery.

What are the biggest challenges in the surgeon profession?

Surgery is intellectually and physically demanding. Please note that surgeons remain physically and mentally fit for a long time — this is the advantage of many years of problem-solving at the table. Excess work, sleepless nights, responsibility for a patient, and the lack of strict working hours are a challenge but also a threat. Research shows that the average life expectancy of surgeons in Poland is significantly lower than the life expectancy of people with higher education in different field. However, I don't see any other specialization for myself, I need adrenaline, and I can't stand a sedentary or office job, I have too much energy!

You are a specialist in vascular surgery. Can you tell us about the specifics of this specialization, because it is quite unique?

As vascular surgeons, we deal with problems in the blood and lymph vessels, excluding the heart. We have to solve problems immediately, the patient brought by the ambulance service most often bleeds heavily, e.g., due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, or has acute ischemia. We operate to save the limb and, in severe cases, life. There are also very complicated planned procedures on the arteries and phrenology, in which we help to solve venous problems. It is a very broad specialization that gives a lot of satisfaction as well as research opportunities.

As a specialist in surgery, do you see a place for new technologies in your work?

Absolutely yes. I am a type of scientist and I love to use new technologies. Every day at work we help each other with computer visualization programs, we use modern equipment. Thanks to new technologies in surgery before our eyes, tremendous progress is made. Nowadays, without them, we wouldn't be able to work anymore.

What does Poland look like compared to other European or world countries when it comes to new technologies in medicine?

We have a lot of smart, young scientists, and we make great use of the new technologies available. The problem in Poland is the implementation of innovative ideas, which in contrast are often implemented abroad. The reason behind that is the lack of funding for them. I hope it will change systematically.

What are the possible benefits of visualization in modern medicine?

I think that every medical specialization can benefit from visualizations, also for training purposes. Please allow me to focus on surgery. I believe that 3D visualizations will significantly improve the quality of communication with the patient, both before treatment and during recovery after the procedure. One cannot forget about the aspect of treatment planning or its modification on the basis of the obtained images.

How do patients respond to diagnoses? Can the use of visualization help them better understand the disease and be more motivated?

I always try to explain to my patients what their disease is and how the surgery works. I inform about the perioperative risks that, in my opinion, the patient must know in order to consciously take part in their treatment process. Visualizations will be tremendous help in the future.

When is cancer surgery performed, and how can visualizations support doctors in this process?

Surgery is one of the basic methods of cancer treatment, and in some cases the only possible form of treatment. The development of technology significantly supports all oncological treatment processes. Advances in oncology make it possible to perform more and more organ-sparing or restorative procedures after an earlier operation.
